The library offers to all user categories access to over 2,370,000 volumes in printed format, organized in encyclopedic collections in the headquarters and in specialized collections, by subject, in branch libraries. Users have also access to millions of articles in pdf and full text format, available through the subscribed databases (see service 7 – to be linked to).

In order to ensure access to the collections, the library makes available to users a number of 1,564 places throughout the “Carol I” Central University Library complex.

Headquarters

A total of 495 seats are available in the headquarters: 461 seats in the 12 reading rooms, 10 seats in the individual study rooms and 24 seats in the Internet Zone.

All user categories have access to the reading rooms, with the exception of the “Alexandru Tzigara Samurcaș” Teachers’ Room, where only teaching staff, researchers and doctoral students have access.

Users have access to the reading rooms with their personal books, but only after handing over a filled bulletin at the Access Information / Access Control area. It will be handed over by the user to the custodian in the reading room, before occupying the seat.

Free access to the shelf

  • the reading rooms contain publications in direct access, specialized in fields;
  • the user can select the publications of interest displayed on the shelves of the reading room where he is;
  • if the user needs publications from the collections of other reading rooms, he can address a request to the librarian or requests to be transferred to the reading room where the document is located.
  • the publications on the shelf, except for those in Reading Room no. 3, “G. Dem Teodorescu”, can be made available by the librarian from the reading room in all other reading rooms, for their consultation by users.

Availability of publications from warehouses

  • The publications in the warehouses are available within 15 minutes after submitting the request to the custodian in the reading room;
  • books are available in all reading rooms;
  • periodicals are consulted as a matter of priority in Reading Room no. 3, “G. Dem Teodorescu” (Periodicals can also be consulted in the other reading rooms, with the exception of those published in the last 8 years and those of the newspaper type);
  • publications from the special collections (bibliophile books, manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, etc.) can only be consulted in Reading Room no. 3, “G. Dem Teodorescu” between the hours of 9.30-15.30, from Monday to Friday, based on an application, which is submitted to the custodian in Reading Room no. 3, “G. Dem Teodorescu”. The categories of users who can consult the publications in the special collections are: teaching staff, researchers, doctoral students and students preparing undergraduate theses;
  • CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs from the library collections can be consulted in the Reading Room “Ing. Petre Badea” (Multimedia Hall);
  • microfiches, microfilms and videotapes can be consulted in the Bibliographic Cabinet;
  • books (except for bibliophiles) and periodicals (except for those published in the last 8 years and newspapers) can be consulted in the individual offices. The request is addressed to the librarian from Reading Room no. 4, “Titu Maiorescu”.

Branch libraries

There are a total of 1,069 seats available within the reading rooms of the branch libraries.

Access is permitted to both teaching staff, students, master’s students, researchers, doctoral students from the University of Bucharest, as well as to users registered in the headquarters, based on a valid access permit (the access permit issued at the headquarters can be registered free of charge in branch libraries).
